World Water Day 2026: Driving sustainable industrial water management in Ghana

On Friday, 27 March 2026, stakeholders will gather to mark World Water Day 2026, highlighting sustainable water management through collaboration. The event includes the launch of Nutrifoods Ghana’s upgraded effluent treatment plant, developed with Alumichem and supported by the Royal Danish Embassy in Accra.

A milestone for sustainable industrial operations

Over the past year, Nutrifoods has invested in upgrading its wastewater treatment facility at the Tasty Tom tomato processing factory in Tema. The new system ensures efficient treatment of industrial wastewater while enabling reuse of treated water for non-process applications, supporting both water conservation and reduced environmental impact . This milestone reflects a shared ambition between industry, technology providers, and international partners to advance sustainable industrial practices in Ghana.

Bringing industry and regulators together

The 2026 event marks the second World Water Day initiative of its kind, continuing to build a platform where industry leaders, environmental regulators, policymakers, and technical experts can come together. The initiative is organised in collaboration between the Danish Embassy in Ghana, Alumichem, and local partners, reinforcing the importance of cross-sector cooperation in addressing water challenges . By creating a space for dialogue and knowledge sharing, the event supports stronger alignment between industrial development and environmental responsibility.

Addressing a critical water challenge

In Ghana, less than 4% of wastewater is currently treated, highlighting a significant need for scalable and effective solutions . Industrial wastewater treatment plays a key role in:
  • Protecting local water resources
  • Supporting public health
  • Ensuring compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements
  • Enabling sustainable industrial growth
The event will demonstrate how modern treatment solutions can help industries meet these challenges in a practical and reliable way.

From awareness to action

Beyond raising awareness, World Water Day 2026 is designed as a practical, solution-oriented platform. By showcasing a fully operational wastewater treatment system, the initiative helps build confidence in technologies that enable industries to:
  • Achieve compliance with discharge limits
  • Improve water efficiency
  • Reduce environmental impact
  • Strengthen long-term operational sustainability
The collaboration also highlights the role of international partnerships, with the Danish Embassy supporting knowledge exchange and sustainable technology adoption in Ghana .

Building on strong momentum

The 2026 event builds on the success of last year’s World Water Day gathering, which brought together key stakeholders to explore solutions for industrial wastewater treatment. By continuing the initiative, partners aim to strengthen collaboration across industry and government while accelerating the adoption of sustainable water management practices.
