World Water Day 2026 – Bringing communities, industry, and partners together in Ghana

Alumichem, together with Nutrifoods Ghana and the Royal Danish Embassy in Accra, successfully marked World Water Day 2026 with the commissioning of an upgraded wastewater treatment plant in Tema, bringing communities, industry, and partners together to advance sustainable water management.

Stakeholders from across government, industry, and partner organisations gathered in Tema to celebrate World Water Day 2026 and the commissioning of the upgraded wastewater treatment plant.

Alumichem, in collaboration with Nutrifoods Ghana Limited and the Royal Danish Embassy in Accra, successfully marked World Water Day 2026 with the official commissioning of an upgraded wastewater treatment plant at the Tasty Tom tomato processing facility in Tema.
The event brought together government representatives, industry leaders, regulators, and partners, highlighting the importance of collaboration in addressing Ghana’s water challenges and promoting sustainable industrial practices.

A milestone for sustainable water use

The newly commissioned wastewater treatment plant represents a significant step toward responsible water management in Ghana’s industrial sector.
Designed and supplied by Alumichem, the solution enables efficient treatment of industrial wastewater while supporting reuse of treated water for non-process applications, such as irrigation and site maintenance. The facility is expected to save approximately 80,000 litres of water daily, contributing to water conservation and reduced environmental impact.
In addition, sludge generated from the treatment process is utilised for biogas production, supporting renewable energy generation and reducing waste.

Strong support from government and stakeholders

The event was officiated by the Deputy Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, who highlighted the importance of sustainable water management for Ghana’s development.
With less than 4% of wastewater currently treated in Ghana, the need for scalable and effective solutions is urgent. The Deputy Minister emphasised that initiatives like this demonstrate how industry can play a key role in protecting water resources while supporting economic growth.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also reinforced the importance of compliance and monitoring, noting increasing concerns around water pollution and its impact on public health and ecosystems.

Driving collaboration for sustainable solutions

The project was developed through close collaboration between Nutrifoods Ghana, Alumichem, and the Royal Danish Embassy in Accra, demonstrating the value of partnerships in advancing sustainable industrial solutions.
The Danish Embassy was recognised for facilitating technology transfer and supporting environmentally responsible initiatives in Ghana, while Nutrifoods reaffirmed its commitment to operating responsibly and in compliance with environmental regulations.

From compliance to opportunity

The upgraded wastewater treatment system highlights how industries can move beyond compliance to create long-term operational and environmental value. By implementing modern treatment solutions, companies can:

  • Ensure compliance with discharge regulations
  • Reduce environmental impact
  • Improve water efficiency and reuse
  • Contribute to circular and sustainable resource use

Building momentum for the future

World Water Day 2026 builds on the success of last year’s initiative, continuing to create a platform for knowledge sharing, practical solutions, and cross-sector collaboration.
The event demonstrated how technology, policy, and industry collaboration can accelerate the adoption of sustainable water management practices in Ghana and across West Africa.

Alumichem remains committed to supporting industries with tailored, reliable, and scalable wastewater treatment solutions, helping drive sustainable development and protect vital water resources.
