Green grant awarded: Advancing circular aluminium for sustainable water treatment

Alumichem has received a green grant to reduce the climate footprint of aluminium chlorohydrate (ACH) by replacing virgin aluminium with recycled aluminium, advancing circular water treatment solutions.

Used aluminium is collected and prepared for reprocessing, forming the foundation of circular approach to sustainable ACH production.

A new circular innovation project aims to significantly reduce the climate footprint of aluminium chlorohydrate (ACH), a key product used in drinking water and wastewater purification, delivering tangible benefits for both the environment and the climate.

Through an ambitious collaboration between Alumichem, Stena Recycling A/S, and Stena Aluminium AB, the partners are launching an innovative project that will transform ACH production into a circular process. The project will replace virgin aluminium with recycled aluminium and ensure that valuable by-products from aluminium alloys are recovered and recycled rather than lost.

Supported by MUDP to drive sustainable innovation

With support from the Environmental Technology Development and Demonstration Programme (MUDP) under the Danish Ministry of the Environment, the project will develop and demonstrate a more sustainable method for producing ACH based on recycled aluminium. The solution is designed to maintain the high quality required for drinking water applications while significantly reducing energy use, CO₂ emissions, and material waste.

“By rethinking our process, we can produce a high-quality drinking water chemical based on recycled aluminium. At the same time, we ensure that the other metals contained in aluminium alloys are not lost, but given new life in other material cycles.”

From scrap to circular solution. Used aluminium is collected, sorted, and remelted, transforming scrap into high-quality recycled aluminium.

In addition, the project will explore the capture and reuse of hydrogen generated during the production process, enabling its use as a green energy source and further strengthening the sustainability of the solution.

Stay tuned for more updates as we contribute to the circular transition and continue to deliver efficient, responsible water treatment solutions for global markets.
