Alumichem secures clean drinking water in Ghana with EIFO guarantee

With support from EIFO’s new Africa Facility, Alumichem can continue securing clean drinking water for millions of people in Ghana. The guarantee reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to sustainable water solutions across West Africa.

Alumichem A/S has become the first company to receive a contract guarantee under EIFO’s new Africa Facility. The guarantee, amounting to up to DKK 26 million, enables Alumichem to continue supplying advanced water treatment chemicals to Ghana Water Limited – helping to ensure access to clean drinking water for more than four million people.

The new guarantee scheme is part of the Danish Government’s Africa Strategy, aimed at strengthening Danish companies’ opportunities in new and higher-risk markets. EIFO covers 90 percent of the risk on Alumichem’s deliveries to Ghana Water Limited, which has been one of the company’s largest customers since 2022.

Danish technology with global impact

Since 2017, Alumichem has invested in test facilities, pilot projects, and a strong local presence in Ghana. Today, the company is the country’s largest supplier of specialty chemicals for drinking water treatment. Alumichem’s coagulants play a critical role in transforming lake and river water into safe drinking water – an effort that has significantly improved water quality and supply reliability for millions of people.

“When operating in Africa, payment terms can sometimes be challenging. The EIFO guarantee gives us the confidence to continue our deliveries – and thereby secure clean drinking water for millions of people, even when payments are delayed,” says Christian Kemp, Founder and CBO of Alumichem.

A partnership for sustainable development

The guarantee granted to Alumichem is highlighted as a prime example of how Danish businesses, public institutions, and government can work together to drive development and deliver sustainable solutions in Africa.

Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen states:
“When a company like Alumichem delivers technology that secures clean drinking water for millions of people, and EIFO supports this with risk-willing financing, we are putting the Government’s Africa Strategy into practice.”

Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Morten Bødskov adds:
“By applying Danish water technology in Ghana, we help ensure clean drinking water for millions while strengthening the position of Danish companies in new markets – particularly within green and sustainable solutions.”

Paving the way for growth in West Africa

EIFO’s Africa Facility aims to support projects with a total value of at least DKK 500 million in countries where commercial risk would otherwise limit access to financing. For Alumichem, the guarantee allows the company to maintain its deliveries in Ghana while continuing its expansion across the region.

“It is meaningful to help secure clean drinking water in areas where it cannot be taken for granted. With EIFO’s support, we can continue our work and see strong potential to expand into additional markets across both East and West Africa,”
